- <p> DIED. R.D. Laing, 61, British psychiatrist whose radical
- views rocked the medical establishment; of a heart attack; in
- Saint-Tropez. In his 1960 book The Divided Self: An Existential
- Study in Sanity and Madness, Laing argued that schizophrenia
- might be an individual's attempt to opt out of an intolerable
- world. He championed patients' rights, condemned the use of
- electroshock and lobotomies, experimented with the therapeutic
- use of LSD and mescaline. Although he later modified his
- romanticized view of insanity, Laing's break with conventional
- psychiatry made him a counterculture hero.
