  14. <p>    DIED. R.D. Laing, 61, British psychiatrist whose radical
  15. views rocked the medical establishment; of a heart attack; in
  16. Saint-Tropez. In his 1960 book The Divided Self: An Existential
  17. Study in Sanity and Madness, Laing argued that schizophrenia
  18. might be an individual's attempt to opt out of an intolerable
  19. world. He championed patients' rights, condemned the use of
  20. electroshock and lobotomies, experimented with the therapeutic
  21. use of LSD and mescaline. Although he later modified his
  22. romanticized view of insanity, Laing's break with conventional
  23. psychiatry made him a counterculture hero.
